MPs Learn About Kruger’s Water Resource Issues

Members of the parliamentary portfolio committee on water affairs spent some time in the Kruger National Park (KNP) on August 1 and 2, 2006 where they were able to gain a better understanding of the water resource issues that Kruger faces in light of the drying up of the park’s previously perennial rivers.

Together with the executive mayor of the Mopani District Municipality, Tim Maake, the members of parliament were hosted at Shingwedzi by Dr Thomas Gyedu- Ababio, Kruger’s aquatic biodiversity conservation manager. To further the parliamentary committee’s understanding of the situation in Kruger’s rivers, the top echelons of Kruger’s conservation and scientific services, Dr Freek Venter, Danie Pienaar and Dr Harry Biggs all gave presentations to the committee.

The parliamentary committee have been coming to grips with the water situation in the Limpopo Province.
