Indigenous plants take centre stage in the Kruger

The second Annual Mpumalanga Indigenous Plant sale blossomed from September 22-20, 2006 at Forever Resorts Aventura Badplaas, drawing respected botanists, gardeners and other experts together to discover the joys of gardening with indigenous plants.

 One of the topics under discussion was the positive impact that gardeners can have by wisely gardening with endangered or red data plant species. Selecting the correct species for different regions was also highlighted. With approximately 10,000 plants on sale, there were plants suited for amateurs just taking up indigenous gardening, but also rarer species for diehard collectors.

One such rare plant was the Clivia miatata, with its unusual peach flowers, which sold for R2500 per plant. Also on sale were Swazi stars, insect-eating sundews and the arum lily hybrid known as Sunrise Surprise. The organisers were delighted with the success of the event, and commented that next year they will look forward to an even better turn out from the public.
